Driving News & Safety Tips
Impairment Begins With the First Drink
As we enter the holiday season, it's crucial to understand that driver impairment doesn't wait until you're over the legal limit — it begins with the first drink. Making a plan ahead of time is essential to keeping everyone safe on the road.
Holiday safety reminders:
-
Make a safety plan before you go out: Arrange for a designated driver, taxi, rideshare, or plan to stay overnight at a friend’s home before attending any event where alcohol will be served. This simple step could save a life.
-
Remember that impairment starts immediately: Even one alcoholic drink can affect visual function, judgment, and motor skills. Never assume you are safe to drive after “just one drink.”
-
Be extra cautious during high-risk times: Weekends and holidays — especially Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve — are among the most dangerous times on the road. Plan ahead and use extra caution during these periods.
-
Alcohol isn’t the only impairment risk: Drugs (including prescription medications, marijuana, and some over-the-counter medicines), fatigue, and stress can impair driving just as seriously as alcohol.
The safest choice is always to plan ahead. Taking a few moments to think through your transportation options can make the difference between a safe holiday and a tragic one.
